The Road From A to B

If you feel like your life isn’t going anywhere, this is something that has probably crossed your mind at some point. That feeling of doing the same thing day in and day out. That feeling of not really achieving anything as each day passes. Milestones that you reached have amounted to nothing. You see no real change in your life as everything stays the same. No improvements. Nothing.

Is this a mid-life crisis?

In short, yes. But these sorts of crises may not only happen during mid-life. It’s something that can occur to anyone of any age, so to be more accurate it can be just called a life crisis. But the underpinning factor in crisis is that pervasive feeling that your life is not amounting to anything significant. Nonetheless, coming to realise you are having such a crisis may not be as gloomy as it sounds. It can actually lead you towards realizing that something (namely, you) has to change.

At this point, you are faced with a choice. To change or not to change. Change is a scary thing and taking that first step is always the hardest. However, the alternative is that without taking action you risk staying stuck in a never-ending cycle of wondering what you are doing with your life.

As part of the process in transforming their lives for the ‘better’, people have tried all sorts of things. From quitting their jobs to pursue their passions, taking giant leaps of faith to deep soul searches to figure out what it is they want – the possibilities are endless. But this is also just the positive end of the scale, there will be people that (unfortunately) fall off the wagon and cope in unhealthy ways. But thanks to the wealth of information and resources available in our hyperconnected society, people are turning more and more towards self-help books, life coaching and personal development courses to help them find their way. With professional guidance, they work towards improving their lives, finding meaning in what they do and making the most of the time they have on this earth.

While the journey to achieving a fulfilled and meaningful life is by no means a quick and easy one, the effects of small changes can be seen to compound over time. People that have taken steps towards transforming their lives tend to have better personal care, they have better prioritization skills, they are more mentally and physically healthy. And while they seek meaning and fulfilment, they eventually find themselves out of crises as they consistently put in the efforts to better themselves. Each day then becomes a new opportunity to find purpose, and their lives are enriched because of it.

So, what is the takeaway message here?

First and foremost, a life crisis isn’t something to be feared. It is an opportunity that has been presented which will make you take stock of your life, evaluate your priorities and determine if the path you are on is one that truly satisfies you. It is also a pivot point, the first chance for you to start making a change.

Second, a life crisis isn’t something to conquer in a day. Dealing with it is something that will take time and effort. As with all things that we do, we must work consistently to see the results. But if figuring out how to tackle the crisis is where you come unstuck, there are a wealth of resources available online and on my website to help you with this.

And finally, as you put in effort to overcome your crisis you will find that the benefits will compound over time to bring you greater satisfaction and wellness in your life. It is also never too early nor too late to start the process of growth and self-improvement. If you can start working towards it even before hitting your crisis, even better!
