The Road From A to B

Life is a road. You travel on it and it can take you through many different twists and turns, leading you to all sorts of different places. The journey doesn’t always go smoothly, and you can hit a few speedbumps, potholes – you know, the things that slow you down – and sometimes you might even get lost on the way. We’ve all been there at some point, right? Driving round in circles. And the GPS that guides us, for better or worse, can sometimes break down or lead us the long way round. But more often than not, we get to where we always wanted to go. From Point A to Point B.
Whatever your destination, everyone’s trip is going to be different. However, the idea of going from Point A to Point B is one that repeats itself. As you cruise from one phase in life to another, you’re moving between points, from the beginning of your journey to its ending.
And just as we use the trusty GPS to lead us where we want to get to, we need something similar to guide us in our lives. However, each GPS will require some level of instruction; your car’s GPS requires you to input a destination, so does your life GPS albeit in a slightly different manner.
At your Point A (your here and now), ask yourself these two key questions:
1) Where are you going?
2) How are you going to get there?
Without answers to these two questions, you’ll be floating around ‘figuring things out as you go’. While this can be benign and actually fairly common under most circumstances (let’s be honest here, who hasn’t just ‘winged it’ every once in a while), it invites trouble and dissatisfaction when it persists over the long term. Trouble and dissatisfaction doesn’t have to come from an external source either. It can arise from within as your emotions take over and leave you being emotionally reactive and vulnerable to situations that could be, in fact, simple to deal with. This is something we want to avoid!
So if you find you’ve lost direction in your life, take a step back and try answering those two questions. If you’re not happy with your relationships, ask yourself questions about the relationship. If it’s about your job, ask yourself questions about your job. And then think about how you feel about it – this will define WHERE you’re going. Your emotions and thoughts are the best guide you have to navigating life. (The next best guide is a life coach of course.) Once you break down the reasons why you are doing something (or not doing something), the path to HOW you’ll reach your Point B (aka desired outcome) will become clearer too.
Happy navigating!
